Dr. Paul Stewart opened the Avian and Exotic Pet Clinic of Roanoke in 2010 to provide emergency/after-hours veterinary care as well as daytime therapeutic and preventive care to all birds and exotic pets in an environment suitable for their healing without the hustle and bustle of a dog and cat clinic. As a 1996 graduate of Kansas State University and 1990 graduate of Virginia Tech, Dr. Stewart’s special interests include avian and exotic pet medicine, surgery, ultrasound, endoscopy, radiosurgery, dentistry and geriatric medicine. He had been the primary care provider for birds and exotic pets in two veterinary practices for 14 years prior to opening this clinic.
Dr. Stewart has been guest lecturer at the Virginia/Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, The Southwest Virginia Bird Club meetings and Annual Bird Fair, as well as the Roanoke Valley Bird Club. Dr. Stewart completed externships at the Topeka Zoo, the National Wildlife Health Lab and has appeared on Animal Planet’s “Wildlife Emergency”. He is also Veterinarian-in-Charge at Mill Mountain Zoo.
Dr. Cathy Connelly is a 1993 graduate of Colorado State University with special interest and advanced training in exotic pet medicine, surgery, ultrasound, endoscopy and dentistry. She completed a fellowship at Davis University in California in radiology and ultrasound in 2002-2003.
Dr. Connelly owned and managed Community Animal Hospital in Reno Nevada for 15 years where she was responsible for avian and exotic pet patients as well as zoo animals. She recently worked as Chief of Emergency Medicine at Marathon Animal Hospital in the Florida Keys while providing care for the Everglades Alligator Farm, the Marathon Wild Bird Center and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Animal Farm in Key West. Dr. Connelly also spent a lot of time providing surgical and medical care for the Sea Turtle Hospital in Marathon Florida. Dr. Connelly attends 1-2 veterinary conferences per year (since 1993) with an emphasis on exotic animal species.
